The Definition of Health

Health is a fundamental human right. There are many different definitions of health. The most common is the absence of disease. This definition is flawed because it fails to acknowledge a significant segment of the life span. The only way to define health is to take the whole person into consideration. A holistic approach to health includes a comprehensive look at a person’s physical, mental, and social resources. Here are some ways to think about health as a whole:

There are several ways to define health. The simplest definition is the absence of disease. In this case, health promotion would mean reducing the prevalence of disease and increasing the number of people with no diseases. Other definitions include the capacity to function and the capacity to deal with stress. Increasing the capacity to cope with stress and other stressful situations can also improve one’s health. The World Federation for Public Health defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “the highest possible standard of physical, mental, and social well-being for all human beings.” To promote health, nations must promote activities that promote wellness, and reduce unhealthy ones. They must ensure that all people have access to adequate healthcare, which includes treatment for any disease or disability. This perspective is counterproductive because it ignores the determinants of health. Further, the concept of health should not be used to reposition an individual to a position of weakness.

A third definition of health cannot simply focus on reducing risks and eradicating diseases. The definition must include individuals and address the scale of values placed on health. If the value of health is high, people will take preventive measures and seek appropriate treatment to remain healthy. This radically changes the definition of health. This will make the concept of health more realistic. The goal of achieving total well-being more realistic. With these principles in mind, we can start promoting better health and well-being.

The definition of health is important, but it should not be limited to the absence of disease. It should be inclusive and comprehensive. For example, ‘complete health’ means the absence of physical or mental disabilities. In this sense, health is more than the absence of disease and ability to cope with daily demands. In addition, it is a state of equilibrium. If an individual is healthy, they can be physically active and socially active. If they are not healthy, they will not be able to do the same.

The World Health Organization defines health as complete physical, psychological, social, and psychological well-being. In this definition, ‘complete health’ does not account for chronic illnesses and disabilities and is often counterproductive. ‘Complete health’ is not an achievable goal for most people. This definition of healthy living is more realistic and inclusive, while ‘complete’ is a myth. The WorldHealth Organisation has five dimensions of health. They define total and partial health, a person can be healthy in many ways.
