What Is Hair?

Hair is an important appendage of a mammal’s skin, growing from follicles in the dermis layer. It is composed of a hard material called keratin, which is also found in fingernails and toenails and the claws of some animals. Hair provides a variety of functions, such as thermal regulation and camouflage. It also can communicate information to other mammals, such as a warning or a display of aggression.

The outermost layer of a hair is the cuticle, which is made up of flat cells that overlap like tiles on a terra-cotta roof. Underneath is the cortex, which is coiled and contains pigments that give a hair its color. The coiled proteins are compacted and fused together to make the hair shaft, which is visible above the scalp. The cortex is protected from damage by the cuticle, which is translucent.

Hair has a wide range of shapes and textures. It can be straight, wavy or curly, and it can be thick or thin. A person can use products to shape their hair and help it retain a particular shape or texture. Some examples of these products are gels, mousses and hair waxes. Other products, such as shampoos and conditioners, can be used to wash or maintain a hair’s condition.

A person can also use his or her hair to express style, fashion or culture. For example, a woman may choose to wear her hair in a ponytail or braid it. A man may use a beard or mustache to convey a certain culture or fashion. A person’s hair can also be dyed or highlighted to change its appearance.

Most people have several ways of parting their hair, and they can use a comb or their fingers to do so. A person can comb their hair forward, backward, up or to the side. Depending on the style they want, a person can also use a brush to smooth or fluff their hair.

For a special occasion, a person can ask for input on how to style his or her hair. A professional stylist or a friend may offer suggestions. For example, a person might ask his or her date for styling advice before a prom or a wedding.

Many people have different hair types, such as curly, wavy or straight. When they decide to get their hair cut, they usually visit a salon. The stylist will look at the person’s head and face to determine the best haircut for him or her. Then the stylist will use the tools in the salon to cut the hair. Many salons have mirrors to allow the customer to view how his or her new hairstyle looks. The salon may also have a seating area where customers can wait for their turn. Some salons provide magazines for customers to read while they are waiting. Other salons may have televisions or other entertainment. The staff at the salon can also answer questions about the services that they provide.
