The Meaning of the Word Beautifull

In a world where the words pretty and gorgeous are often used interchangeably, beautifull stands for elegance and sophistication. It suggests a quality that can elicit positive emotional reactions, such as awe or admiration. The word is also associated with natural or artistic beauty, such as a sunset, flower, or sculpture.

The suffix -lous comes from Latin, meaning “to please.” Hence, the notion that beauty is pleasing to the eye, ear, or mind. The word is closely related to the word pretty, which means sweet and charming, and to the verb beautify, which means to make attractive or to embellish. It is sometimes suggested that the etymological roots of the word are related to the adage that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Philosophical theories of beauty are diverse. However, several common dimensions appear in most of the theories: pleasure and surprise, universality, and a sense of harmony in variety. The dimensions derived from philosophical theories tend to be stronger than those based on psychological theory, which are more parsimonious in terms of the number of predictors they consider.

Although the results differed slightly across experiments, the overall pattern was the same: ratings of beauty increased primarily with pleasure and a feeling that the stimulus exceeded expectation. The rating of beauty did not correlate with surprise or the degree to which participants rated the stimulus as telling a story. The results suggest that beauty is a more global sensation than previously thought, and that many of the dimensions posited by philosophers and psychologists are indeed relevant to contemporary feelings of beauty.

In addition to rating beauty, participants in all four experiments answered six questions about their general beliefs about the nature of beauty. These questions covered a range of topics, including whether pleasure and beauty are closely related, whether sharing an experience makes it more beautiful, and the extent to which mood influences beauty. The results showed that participants in all countries agreed that pleasure and beauty are closely related, and that sharing an experience with a loved one increases its beauty. They also endorsed the idea that mood influences beauty, and that it is possible to find beauty in everyday things, such as a field of wildflowers or a piece of art. However, they did not agree that beauty is found in art more than in nature, or that pleasure and beauty are influenced by each other. They did, however, agree that beauty is a subjective phenomenon and that solitary appraisal is important in assessing the beauty of art.
